#Mamavation - Body Fat Analyzing

You know when we have those weeks when the scale isn't so kind to us? When we have worked out and eaten right and still the numbers aren't what you think they should be? Over the last 15 months I've had that happen a lot on a weekly basis. My Mamavation Monday posts have read that way several times. Normally the response will be ,"oh you must be gaining muscle!" Well now I get to find out the real deal!

My Crossfit gym Crossfit Unity Seabrook is kind enough to offer their members for free, a full DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan. It's part of their Spring Slim down challenge. We go in and get scanned and for 6 weeks we get our Crossfit work outs in, make good food choices and then come back to see how what we have done is working! I'm so freaking excited about it that I just can't contain it. What's in it for the winner who loses the most after 6 weeks? Bragging rights! What else? No longer will I have to wonder about the muscle weight. I'm going to know a ton of information.

"A relatively new technology that is very accurate and precise, DEXA is based on a three-compartment model that divides the body into total body mineral, fat-free soft (lean) mass, and fat tissue mass. This technique is based on the assumption that bone mineral content is directly proportional to the amount of photon energy absorbed by the bone being studied.

DEXA uses a whole body scanner that has two low dose x-rays at different sources that read bone and soft tissue mass simultaneously. The sources are mounted beneath a table with a detector overhead. The scanner passes across a person's reclining body with data collected at 0.5 cm intervals. A scan takes between 10-20 minutes. It is safe and noninvasive with little burden to the individual, although a person must lie still throughout the procedure.

DEXA is fast becoming the new "gold standard" because it provides a higher degree of precision in only one measurement and has the ability to show exactly where fat is distributed throughout the body. It is very reliable and its results extremely repeatable; in addition, the method is safe and presents little burden to the subject. Although this method is not as accurate in measuring the extremely obese and the cost of equipment is high, DEXA is quickly moving from the laboratory setting into clinical studies." - courtesy of new-fitness.com

Sunday I will get a full report! I'll keep you posted how this 6 week challenge goes. Wish me luck!

#Mamavation Monday - Inspiring #Crossfit

Mamavation

The 10K didn't turn out all at what I had trained for and the most unexpected curve ball came my way without warning. Today I'm still recovering from it. I'm terribly disappointed and feel like I need to go run 6.55 miles just to feel worthy of the medal that they gave me. I'm not trying to take away from those who walked but it isn't what I spent the last 3 weeks training for. If that makes any sense at all. The other monkey wrench was all the eating out that we did because we didn't have access to the kitchen. Who knew!? I didn't have access to my vitamins and all the normal routine stuff that I eat and prepare. I tried to make smart choices while we were eating out but it's really hard! I was not surprised by the number on the scale. What I was surprised by is to find a fun conversation among the Mamavation Moms on Twitter that I'm the 1st to promote Crossfit. @Bodhi-Bear is now going to give it a try! I'm so happy to have another Mamavation Mom on board. Any one that tries it will be amazed by the inner strength you didn't know you had. Awesome!

Eating out
Blue & Gold Banquet BBQ - 3/5
Chilis - 3/6 - There went the restaurant budget for the month.
Chick-fil-a - 3/16
Chuys 3/19
Outback, Chick-fil-a, Subway (2Xs), Ken's Restaurant for breakfast

My Work Outs - Tapering Off
Monday - I can't remember
Tuesday - Crossfit,TaeBo
Wednesday - I can't remember
Thursday - 10 minute run - busted ankle
Friday - rest
Saturday - 2 mile walk
Sunday -10K, ran 2 miles and walked the rest

Scale Reading -176 that is 2 pounds up from last week but 5 pounds down from 2 days ago! lol - Although for my end of month reading this number is not so great.

Stress Level - The highest it's been in a long time.

The UP side - April is right around the corner! I can't wait to get on with the next 5K.Oh and guess what's coming up???? The Spring Slimfit Challenge at Crossfit! Whoo Hoo!!! What's so great about that? It involves a full body scan.

A bit of crossing the finish line inspiration for you ladies!

HERRICANE SILLY aka The Stealth Bomb! & The Pumpkin Pie

"Soapy, soapy, soapy!" she said. I turned around after responding to an email thinking she had gotten into the hand soap. No she had not gotten into the hand soap. There were big piles of this all over the floor. I opened up the fridge to find....
that she had gotten into the entire pumpkin pie! It had been in the freezer and my son had the oven on last night so I asked him to bake it. The pie went into the fridge to chill and look what she did to it! But wait, that's not all.....
she colored the television! But wait, that's not all....
she fed or colored or whatever this is to her Minnie Mouse! But wait folks, that's not all....
she spread it all over both sides of the couch. But wait there's more... I don't have any more photos but it was all over the floor and in the carpet. She did this in a matter of minutes. Never once did I hear her open or close the refrigerator. Clearly she was running back and forth having a great time. Lucky for me I was able to clean all of this up! It's taken about an hour but it's done. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

1st 10K - Check!

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement here, Twitter and Facebook. I really appreciate the votes of confidence. Last night was tough because from 2am on, my eyes opened every hour on the hour until 5:20am and that's when it was time to hit the shower. My tummy was full of butterflies! My relay partner rocked his half in 1 hour 23 minutes. He did such an awesome job. We traded tags and then it was my turn. No problem! For the last three weeks there was a lot of training to prepare for this race. Right then my music was thumping and all was right with the world until..............my stomach betrayed me. I'm not sure what happened. Did I eat anything different, no? Was I in a positive frame of mind? I was trying to be. There wasn't any fear of the distance. It's no secret yesterday was melt down city. Could this have carried over into my race? Smack dab into two miles I was hit with gastrointestinal distress. Yep, there was NO coming back from it for me. Much to my serious disappointment my destiny was to walk the rest of the way. It's all I could do. There was nothing I could mentally do to stop what was happening to me. Today, was the day to suck it up and cross the finish line walking. In a million years I never thought this would happen but it did. It's 1pm and I'm still sick to my stomach but hope to recover soon. Oh well, on to the next race.....

All Carbed Up! But Am I Ready To Go?

Tomorrow is the big day! I've trained, tapered, babied my latest injury and carbed up tonight for dinner. My packet has been rummaged through and my bib number is 1404. I'm ready to get all my gear together tonight. My super cool pants, For Glory t-shirt, socks, leg sleeves, sports beans, iPod charged and ready to go and of course my running shoes. What more could I possible need? A good night of sleep? That would be nice! Another Epsom salt bath just for good measure?

I'm running 6.555555555 miles tomorrow. I've never done it before and we are supposed to go in with a good attitude, ready to kill it! I thought I was at that place but a rapid chain of events over the last few days have caused me to mentally break down. That's right! The day before the race and I'm brought to tears and long walks. I can only control my own actions but it doesn't mean that these situations hurt any less. It only means that I have the power to control how long it hurts. Here I sit utterly frustrated that I'm no longer prepared mentally. There is NO "A game"  for me right now. How am I going to pull this off? I'll let you know tomorrow after I cross the finish line.

Avoiding a Near Bitten Experience

Today I was going on my two mile run as an end to my training for the 10K coming up on Sunday. Nothing really feels right in my body yet. Stretching, ice, Epsom salt baths, Sunjing, pain relievers have all been used. Two kill two birds with one stone I met my good friend Karen at this park to give my son pointers on his basketball shooting. While I was there it made sense to hit the little trail that was available! She told me about this trail by the water tower or I could just zig zag around the back. My headphones were in and my basketball shoes were on and this was going to be a short run, no problem. About 8 minutes into my run I was going along the gravel road and looked up at the water tower and immediately ate a big rock! My ankle cracked to the right and my whole body went down to the ground. There I sat on this road thinking, NO!!!! this did not just happen. Please tell me I haven't blown out my ankle. A police officer drove up and asked me if I was ok, "I hope so!" Then I thought about my good friend Sharon who told me that it's best to get up and start walking and I did. Thankfully I could still walk but the pain was there.
After walking a bit I decided it was best to go back to the basketball court and call it good. A few minutes later this man walks up and tells us, "Be careful! I saw a rattle snake over there on the trail!" WHAT????? WOW - Can you believe that? I couldn't have gotten bit by a rattle snake. I'm thinking that rock saved me! I wouldn't have heard a rattle snake at all because I was rocking out to my tunes at the time. I'm calling this a blessing in disguise. At least I can recover what happened with a bit of ice. lol - I'll take it!

Sport Beans - So I Might Have A Problem...

Today I hit On The Run again to resupply my sport beans since I ate them all during a trial run. I had to get one of every flavor available. Look! They have orange, lemon-lime and watermelon too. As you can see the packages are open. It only made sense to try the new flavors and I only ate two. Well I ate two out of each package so that's 10 and now I'm all hyped up on Sport Beans and full of energy after my last Crossfit workout this week. I'm having to taper off for the big race on Sunday. I'm really in love with these beans!!!!!

Waterproof Headphones

Found the cure to my sweat in the ear buds issue today. It's Surge 2G Waterproof Headphones that I found at my local Best Buy. Today I was bound and determined to get that 6 mile run in. I started out ok but then I started feeling pain in places that weren't there before. My decision was to stop and not run through the pain. The last thing I want is an injury! My stopwatch had not been started and I had to rely on the music time. Apparently my run was only about 45 minutes. It didn't seem that long which is amazing to me! My other goal was to make sure to get my sweat on to see if these headphones really work and YES - they really do work. I should have used smaller inserts but they do what they are intended to do. Also after my workout I tried the Jet Blackberry flavored Gu. YUK! YUK! YUK! The flavor is fine it's the texture that got me. It's like a friend of mine described....a cross between toothpaste and an upper respiratory infection. lol - I think I will stick with the energy beans for now!

6 Miles....Just 6 Miles

Today is my long run for the 10K training portion of our fun little relay we are running next Sunday. I've got my supplies and I'm ready to go! Compression leg sleeves because my legs have had a history of serious issues. Body Glide to take care of the horrible things that can happen to your skin because you have been doing the same motion for too long. Gu which I have yet to try and Sport Beans by Jelly Belly. I chose cherry and fruit punch flavors and they are both yummy!

My goal was 6 miles but I cut it short to 5 miles. I had so many issues!
Sweat going into my ear buds so I could no longer hear my tunes.
My shoe lace came untied.
I was so stressed out that I was going to be late that I couldn't focus and cut my run short.
I had to do a couple of 20 second walks in between.
Nature called and I had to visit the port-o-potty, EWWWWWWWWWWWW!
After 1:08:39seconds I made it back to my car.

Hoping to get one long run in this week with a better time and not so many stops!

Aloha Friday #258 - Happy 13th

On Monday we will celebrate 13 years of marriage, only I will be here and he will be out of the country. It's the first time we haven't been together to celebrate. Even if we had the kids we would at least all go out for dinner. This year not at all. This got me to thinking.....

HERRICANE SILLY - Strikes Again!

It's Spring Break. A time when all children should be on vacation away from home having a good time. If you are one of the unlucky ones that has to keep your kids at home, like myself, you have my apologies. We were suppose to be gone but due to a series of unfortunate events I'm here with three kids that need constant entertainment. What is with the photo of the shattered glass you ask? That would compliments of the 2 year old. She gifted me with this task first thing this morning.
She was sitting in the hallway upstairs with her feet dangling off. She apparently kicked the globe back and forth so hard that it finally hit the wall and shattered. Awesome! Oh well, it needed to be replaced any way. How many more days left?

#Mamavation Monday - A Week Full of New!

Mamavation

Completely stepped outside the box this week. There was nothing but new work outs this week. I'm in training for a 10K and I'm tired to be honest with you. My kids are home for Spring Break. My husband will be gone for business and I have to train. It's hard to juggle these kids and make the time for everything that I need to do. It just comes with the territory so this is me sucking it up and moving on! Next. The new trainer that I'm working with has let me know just how much further I have to go! I thought I was in better shape but his work outs are just showing me that I have a lot more work to do.

Eating out
Blue & Gold Banquet BBQ - 3/5
Chilis - 3/6 - There went the restaurant budget for the month.

My Work Outs -
Monday -Yoga, Bootcamp
Tuesday - Crossfit,TaeBo

Sunday -  New Trainer - Theo Workout

Scale Reading -175 that is 4 pounds down from last week.

Stress Level -You read it in the first paragraph.

The UP side - I'm continuing to challenge myself! Now the trick is to train without over training or messing up my leg!

On my Wordless Wednesday post I introduced you to a friend of mine that gets his work out friends to sign up for all these crazy events. He's just a positive person and encourages you and then you believe you can and go for it. This got me to thinking....
